How to Choose an Online Quran Teacher for Your Child

Practical questions for parents to ask before choosing an online Quran tutor, and what to watch for in the first few classes.

Online classes have made it possible for children almost anywhere to learn from a qualified Quran teacher. They have also made the choice harder, because there are many options and it can be difficult to judge quality from a website. These are the questions we suggest parents ask, whichever academy they choose.

1. Is the teacher's own recitation correct?

This is the most important point, and it is the easiest to check. Ask the teacher to recite a short surah in the trial class. If you are not confident judging Tajweed yourself, ask a relative or your local imam to listen to a recording.

2. Is the class one-to-one?

In a group class, a child may read for only a few minutes. One-to-one lessons let the tutor hear every letter and correct mistakes immediately, which matters most for beginners.

3. How does the teacher handle mistakes?

Watch how corrections are made. A good teacher is consistent and firm about pronunciation, but also patient and encouraging. Children who feel embarrassed often stop trying.

4. Will you be kept informed?

Ask how often you will hear about your child's progress and what they should practise at home. Short, regular updates help you support learning between classes.

5. Are timings realistic for your family?

A class that clashes with school, homework or dinner will eventually be missed. Choose times your child can keep week after week.

6. Can you sit in on classes?

You should always be able to observe your child's lessons. A reputable academy will welcome this, especially for young children.

7. Is there a free trial with no obligation?

A trial class lets you and your child meet the teacher before committing. Use it to check the points above.

What to watch in the first month

  • Your child looks forward to class, or at least does not dread it.
  • The teacher corrects the same mistakes consistently until they are fixed.
  • You can see a clear plan: what has been covered and what comes next.

If something is not working, raise it early. A change of time or teacher is often all that is needed.
